16 June 2010 → Tea house to open in Minsk in 2013

A tea house may be opened in Minsk on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of twin city relations between Minsk and the Japanese city of Sendai, said Acting Minsk Mayor Nikolai Ladutko as he met with a delegation from Sendai on 15 June.

“The Friendship Clock in Sendai public garden functions precisely, the cherry trees are growing, all we need is to open a tea house,” Nikolai Ladutko said. The Minsk architects can implement this project taking into account the blueprints of their Japanese colleagues. “In 2013 we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of twin city relations between Minsk and Sendai. The tea house may be opened on this occasion.

Minsk and Sendai established bilateral relations in1972. In April 1972 a delegation of Sendai led by then-mayor Takeshi Shimano visited Minsk. The sides signed a joint communique. On the 30th anniversary of the twin city relations the Minsk City Council decided to name the public garden near Belarusian State Music Theater in honor of the twin city of Sendai. Later a walkway of mountain cherry trees was planted there. Since 2001 a delegation of the Minsk athletes partakes in the annual Sendai international semi-marathon.

A delegation of Sendai’s University of Physical Culture led by its rector Hozawa Taiji is set to visit Belarusian State University of Physical Education and sports facilities of Minsk.
