05 January 2010 → Marrow donor register set up in Minsk

A municipal marrow donor register has been opened in Minsk, Director of the National Research Centre for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Olga Aleinikova told reporters on 29 December, BelTA has learnt.

In her words, over 1,000 people have been included in the register. “It is encouraging that the first donor has already been found,” she said.

Despite the establishment of its own register, Belarus will continue searching for donors through the European Marrow Donor Information System.

Olga Aleinikova deems it necessary to establish a Slavonic donor register for Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians as the Slavonic gene pattern differs from other gene patterns.

In 2009 over 350 bone marrow transplant surgeries were performed in Belarus. “At present the National Research Centre for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology performs all kinds of transplant surgeries possible. The progress of pediatric oncology and hematology in Belarus is impressive. Over 70% of patients recover completely,” the specialist underlined.
