10 April 2017 → Leaders of Minsk and Budapest outlined promising areas of cooperation
On April 20, in the City Hall there were held negotiations between the leadership of Minsk and Budapest, the "Minsk-Novosti" agency reports.
The Belarusian side was represented by the Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Andrei Shorets, his deputy Alexander Krepak, the General Director of the State Enterprise "Minsktrans" Leonty Papenok, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Hungary and Slovenia Alexander Khainovsky and others. Among those present from the Hungarian side was the Mayor of Budapest Istvan Tarlos, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to the Republic of Belarus Vilmos Siklavari and others.
During the discussion, the parties identified several areas of interaction that are of interest to the two cities. Among the most promising areas identified by the parties are transport, tourism, sports, industrial production, culture, housing and communal services, gastronomy and others. For example, Istvan Tarlos proposed to create a retail outlet of Minsk in Budapest and that of Budapest in Minsk. Andrei Shorets supported the idea, saying that it could be implemented in the Minsk Komarovsky market - one of the largest retail facilities in the country.
“Among our partner cities the relations that are being developed with Budapest are the most dynamic ones. The program of the Days of Budapest in Minsk is quite rich: it includes a business forum, a tasting of Hungarian products, and a discussion of cooperation in the spheres of tourism, culture and others. This means that the intentions of the Hungarian delegation are very serious. The plan of measures to be worked out after the today's visit will become a kind of bassis for the development of bilateral relations between our cities and countries. We can learn a lot from Budapest, and we can also show the best that we have," said the Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Andrei Shorets.
For his part the Mayor of Budapest stressed that he had already managed to see much in Minsk, noting that the city is very clean and well-groomed.
— “In 2016 an agreement on cooperation between Minsk and Budapest was signed. And in the year of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries we propose that the scope of this agreement be expanded. It primarily concerns expansion of cooperation in the spheres of housing, public utilities and culture. Together with the Mayor of Minsk Andrei Shorets, we have reached full agreement in these matters and decided to appoint persons whose responsibility will be to lead our cooperation in the designated areas,” said the Mayor of Budapest.
At the end of the meeting, the leaders of the two cities exchanged souvenirs.
