17 March 2010 → St Mary’s Cathedral in Minsk celebrates 300th anniversary
St Mary’s Cathedral in Minsk is celebrating the 300th anniversary of its consecration, BelTA learnt from the Roman Metropolitan Curia of Minsk.
The main celebration events will be held on 12 June. The Catholic Church invites the parishioners and all goodwill people to say prayers giving thanks for the rebirth of St Mary’s Cathedral.
The church was founded by the Society of Jesus on 31 July 1700. On 16 March 1710 Bishop Kazimir Brzestowski consecrated the church. After World War II, the authorities closed down the church.
On 9 December 1993 the Council of Ministers of Belarus issued a resolution to return the building of the cathedral to the Roman-Catholic Church. On 21 October 1997, the Minsk Catholic Church of St. Mary was reconsecrated. Attending the ceremony were 4 cardinals, 7 bishops, around 100 priests.
