Portuguese designers to debut at Fashion Mill 2010 Festival in Minsk

Designers from Portugal will make a debut appearance at the 19th international fashion and photo festival, Fashion Mill 2010, which is held in Minsk on 6-8 May. The Portuguese collections will be shown on 8 May, Belarusian fashion designer Sasha Varlamov told BelTA.

All in all, 207 collections by Belarusian designers will be demonstrated as part of the competition program. Twelve experts from Russia, Lithuania, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Portugal, Czechia, Belgium, Italy and France will pick up 10 best women’s collections, 5 men’s, 5 teenagers’ and 5 children’s collections.

“The main distinguishing feature of the Fashion Mill festival is that we do not have a jury panel. It is impossible to choose the one and only collection out of 207. Every designer has his own vision on the fashion trends. Thus we give the beginners a chance to find their audience and earn the recognition of the peers,” Sasha Varlamov said.

The semifinal of the international contest of young designers of the Russian Silhouette charity fund will be held on 6-7 May. Director of the fund Tatiana Titkova will choose the two best collections which will represent Belarus at the finals in Moscow in September 2011.

The festival will conclude with the show of the best collections made by Belarusian designers, an award ceremony and a show of guest collections. The concluding chord will be the True Fashion Parade featuring 32 Belarusians pop singers, theater and cinema celebrities, television personalities and athletes. The project has been organized by the youth fashion center of the Belarusian State University.

“This project is interesting as ordinary people whose parameters do not fit in the 90-60-90 standard will do the runway. The main goal for the designers was to highlight the individuality of every person, to find an approach to each participant. We will know how well the designers have coped with the task by watching the reaction of the audience,” Sasha Varlamov said.

Minsk to host international landscape festival

Works of landscape artists will be presented at the fourth international festival dedicated to People’s Artist of Belarus Vitaly Tsvirko. The festival will be held at the Rakurs and Labyrinth galleries of the National Library of Belarus from 19 January to 11 February, BelTA learnt from the library.
The exposition will feature the works of aquarellists, painters, photographers and graphic designers such as Vladimir Kozhukh, Yegor Batalyonok, Yuri Gavrin, Alexander Zabavchik, Vladimir Kachan and Vyacheslav Pavlovets.

The organizers of the exhibition believe that landscape is the most understandable artistic genre which has made significant inroads not only in painting, but also in photography and computer graphics. This genre helps to depict the inner world of a painter, his attitude to the motherland and impressions most precisely.

The landscapes of the famous Belarusian artist, Vitaly Tsvirko, are distinguished by their unique artistic vision. His works became the hallmark of the national art and this is why the international landscape festival bears his name.

The visitors of the exhibition will be shown a documentary about the painter. The descendants of the great artist will deliver a speech at the opening of the ceremony.

The festival is aimed to reveal new perspectives of the genre and its potential.

Vitaly Tsvirko is a Soviet painter, the People’s Artist of the BSSR. He painted a number of pictures dedicated to the Great Patriotic War and other historic and revolutionary themes. He taught many famous artists, including People’s Artist of Belarus Leonid Shchemelev. In 1958-1962 he was rector of the Belarusian State Theatre and Art Institute.

Sardinian choir concert continues Italian Renaissance in Belarus

A concert of the Sardinian choir “Tenores Mamoiada” has become another event of the Italian Renaissance in Belarus festival. This large-scale cultural project is expected to become a bridge between the Belarusian and Italian cultures, Julio Prigioni, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Belarus, said before the performance of the Italian artists at the Belarusian State Academy of Music.
According to Giuseppe Carboni, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Belarus in Cagliari, the Sardinian choir “Tenores Mamoiada” has presented in Minsk a Tenore ethnic vocal style proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A Tenore oral traditional vocal style embodies the pastoral culture of Sardinia, which has been preserved over centuries.
It is interesting that the four artists of the choir have never studied music. They say they have been singing all their lives imitating old singers and thus preserving this unique vocal style. The Sardinian artists shared the secrets of their art with students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music on 27 October.
A visit of the Italian artists in Minsk was initiated by the Italian province of Nuoro under the auspices of the Embassy of Italy in Belarus, the Embassy of Belarus in Italy and the Belarusian Honorary Consulate in Cagliari.
Giuseppe Carboni noted that Belarusian culture is also well presented in Sardinia in autumn 2009. It attests to the development of Sardinia-Belarus relations. For example, a series of concerts including a concert of the Belarusian State Dance Company Khoroshki were held in late September. A vocal quartet Elegia from Minsk took part in the International Festival of Religious Choir Music in Cagliari on 18-19 October.
Cooperation between Sardinia and Belarus has been made much more intense for the past decade. Cultural events, exchange of students and visits of state officials and businessmen are organized on a regular basis.
In summer 2009 for the first time in the history of the Belarus-Sardinia relations a group of children from Sardinia spent their holidays at children’s camp Zubrenok in Belarus. It was a return visit. Sardinian families have welcomed Belarusian children for 23 years.
Sardinia is the only Italian region, which has passed a special law relating to the cooperation with Belarus. The Belarusian-Italian training center Sardinia-Global was founded in Minsk five years ago.

Trostenets war memorial near Minsk to udnergo major reconstruction

The Trostenets Memorial near Minsk will be turned into an international site, Alexander Akentiev, chief of the general layout department of the Minskgrad development agency, told a press conference on 29 July.
In 1941-1945, the Nazis killed 206,500 people in the vicinity of the village of Malyi Trostenets. Among them were civilians, including citizens of eight Western European countries, participants of the anti-fascist underground movement, partisan movement, POWs and also Minsk residents.
“This site should be viewed as international. Belarus is known in Europe for the accomplishments in culture, sports, industry. People from those eight European countries should know that their compatriots were killed in Belarus during the war,” Alexander Akentiev said.
Alexander Andronchik, head of the urban planning and improvement department of the architecture and town-planning committee of the Minsk City Hall, reminded that the committee has announced a national contest for the best Trostenets Memorial design. Applications can be submitted from 27 July till 7 August. Contest works will be considered by 22 October 2009. The works on the Trostenets Memorial will be divided into stages taking into account the large scale of the project (the memorial occupies 124 hectares).
The first stage will concentrate on the improvement of the territory. The major efforts will be focused on the place where concentration camp prisoners were kept and executed. Camp prisoners were considered as doubly killed, they were shot first and then burnt. Their ashes were scattered around Trostenets. In this respect the specialists believe it is necessary to preserve the initial form of the landscape and not to construction any high structure there.
Moreover, the land where the memorial is situated is very expensive. Minsk could construct a residential area for the estimated 15,000 people. “Yet the city wants this place to remain sacred,” Alexander Akentiev.
