08 September 2009 → Minsk to host conference on penitentiary medicine 9-10 SeptemberMinsk will host the 4th international conference “Urgent problems of penitentiary medicine. Tuberculosis and other socially significant diseases in penitentiary institutions”. The conference will be held in the National Library of Belarus on September 9-10. The international forum is organized within the project of the UNDP “Support of the National Programme “Tuberculosis” in the Republic of Belarus”. Taking part in the conference will be representatives of the Belarusian Health Ministry and the Belarusian Interior Ministry, international and public organizations. Representatives of eight foreign countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Russian Federation, Ukraine and Estonia) have been invited to attend the conference. They will discuss the urgent issues of preventive measures, treatment of TB and other socially significant diseases in penitentiary institutions. They will tell about the experience of their countries to solve these problems. UN /UNDP Representative in Belarus Antonius Broek, Health Minister of Belarus Vasily Zharko and Interior Minister of Belarus Anatoly Kuleshov will deliver speeches during the opening of the conference. The conference will also consider the problems, prospects, strategy and achievements in the fight against tuberculosis and prevention of HIV-infection in penitentiary institutions. Participants of the forum will discuss the issues related to the legal regulation of medical aid in penitentiary institutions. Special attention will be paid to the international experience in solving the problems of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB), the cooperation between penitentiary and civic TB services. The conference will also consider the situation concerning the HIV-infection in penitentiary institutions of Europe. The projects of the UNDP “Support of the National Programme “Tuberculosis” in the Republic of Belarus” and “Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus” will be presented at the conference. The UNDP “Support of the National Programme “Tuberculosis” in the Republic of Belarus” is carried out jointly with the Belarusian Health Ministry. This project spans five years. It is financed by the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (more than $14.2 million) and UNDP (almost $167.5 thousand).
