18 September 2009 → Minsk hosts international competition of young architectsOver 300 projects from 28 countries take part in the Third Minsk International Biennale of Young Architects “Leonardo Award 2009” which is held within the framework of the Eighth National Architecture Contest “Minsk 2009”, Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Architects, President of the International Association of Unions of Architects Alexander Korbut told reporters. Taking part in the Minsk 2009 festival are architects from over 40 countries of Europe, Asia and America. The year of 2009 was announced the Year of Youth in the CIS member states, therefore a special focus was placed on the “Leonardo Award 2009” competition of young architects. “The main peculiarity of this festival is that it grew from the national event to become really international,” Alexander Korbut said. The festival will feature five competitions. The “Leonardo Award 2009” competition alone gathered 117 architects from the CIS member states and the European Union: Spain, Greece, Finland, Slovenia, and Poland. The competition is to draw attention to the problems facing young architects, including education and employment. “The event is to help raise the quality of architectural education in Belarus,” Alexander Korbut said. It is the first time the competition has been held under the aegis and with the assistance of the International Union of Architects. It attests to the significance and international recognition of the competition. The Eighth National Architecture Contest “Minsk 2009” is held on 17-19 September. The festival is organized by the Belarusian Union of Architects under the auspices of the Ministry of Architecture and Construction, Culture Ministry, Minsk City Hall, International Union of Architects, International Association of Unions of Architects, Architectural Council of Central and Eastern Europe.
