19 October 2009 → Minsk to host session of CIS Interstate Hydrometeorology Council on 20-21 October
session of the CIS Interstate Hydrometeorology Council will take place at the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk on 20-21 October, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee told BelTA. The session will discuss the operation of weather services of CIS states, their cooperation within the World Meteorological Organization, progress in fulfilling a joint action plan meant to implement the hydrometeorology security concept as well as preparation of a strategy to guide the development of weather services of the CIS states. Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization Michel Jarraud and Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister of Belarus Vladimir Tsalko are expected to attend the session. The CIS Interstate Hydrometeorology Council was set up in 1992 with a view to coordinating efforts of national weather services of the CIS states. Thanks to the Council efforts the CIS nations have preserved the common space for sharing hydrometeorology information. Procedures have been created to help national weather services to jointly respond to possible natural and man-caused emergencies. A specialized regional weather service has been earmarked to keep the CIS nations informed about the spread of pollution agents during man-made accidents, including nuclear ones. A drought monitoring center has been set up.
