16 December 2009 → New Children of Chernobyl project launched in Belarus

The Healthcare Ministry and the UNICEF have launched a new Children of Chernobyl project in Belarus, Head of the EC Delegation in Ukraine and Belarus Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira told a press conference in Minsk on 15 December.

The project is designed for two years and is aimed at protecting the health of the children and women living in the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. The financial support will be provided by the European Union.

One of the main goals of the project is to improve the quality of medical services to women and children living in the Chernobyl-affected territories, representative of the UNICEF in Belarus Yuri Oksamitny. “Special attention will be paid to the issues of training of medical workers in the contaminated regions,” Yuri Oksamitny said. Improvement of the material and technical resources of the healthcare institutions taking part in the project will be another area of focus of the project, he added.

In particular, 15 healthcare establishments in the Mogilev, Gomel and Brest oblasts will acquire new equipment worth more than $600,000, i.e. infant incubators, artificial respirating units, etc.

Special attention will be paid to the work on popularizing healthy lifestyle among the youth. One of the goals of the project is to provide assistance in forming positive and responsible parenthood. Besides, five centers on friendly support of children and the youth will be opened in Belarus.

Partaking in the project are also Belarusian State Medical University, Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, the National Research and Practical Center “Mother and Child”, healthcare departments of the Gomel, Mogilev and Brest oblast executive committees, said Yelena Bogdan, head of the department on medical assistance to mothers and children of the Healthcare Ministry of Belarus.

The Children of Chernobyl project will cost nearly $1 million.
