20 January 2010 → Biotechnology center opens in Minsk
A biotechnology center for the development of new biotechnologies and pilot production of biological products was opened in the Institute of Microbiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) on 19 January.
According to Emiliya Kolomiyets, director of the NASB Institute of Microbiology, the Belarusian market of biological products has been steadily increasing. In her words, benefits from the application of biological products developed in the center are expected to total Br3 billion a year.
The center will help reduce the country’s heavy import dependence on the vitally important biotechnological products, mitigate negative consequences of the ecological problems.
Chairman of the NASB Presidium Mikhail Myasnikovich, who attended the opening ceremony, noted that a lot had been recently made in the country in the field of biotechnologies. In 2010 there will be set up five more biotechnology companies and almost ten new productions in Belarus.
