Sovetsky District is called ‘the golden mean’ of Minsk. As a district of the capital its history goes back to March 17, 1938 – the date of the foundation of three districts. By Decree No 19 of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the BSSR one of the districts was named ‘Voroshilovsky’ and which on November 2, 1961 was renamed ‘Sovetsky’. The present boundaries were drawn in 2004. It is located in the central part of Minsk.
In the district there is such an approach that architecture of residential buildings is organically combined with architecture of industrial and commercial enterprises. Despite its long history and the density of population the district has been rapidly growing for the past years. In addition to housing construction more and more facilities for social purposes are built in the district. Commercial network is growing too.
Over 167.000 people are permanent residents in Sovetsky District. It is the most densely populated district in the city. The inhabitants of the district represent over one hundred nationalities.
The area of the district is 2.32 thousand hectares, of which 1120 hectares are occupied by green plantations. The total length of the streets in the district makes up 105.7 kilometers. Park of Friendship, the well-groomed green corner of the territory adjacent to Tsna Reservoir, Moulyavin Boulevard and Yakub Kolas Square have become favourite places for rest and recreation for citizens and guests of the capital.
In the district there are over 10.5 thousand economic management entities, including about 3.000 legal persons and around 8.000 individual businessmen.
The district has 21 industrial enterprises including such giants of native industry as "Amkodor" JSC, "Minsk Production Enterprise of Computer Engineering Techniques" JSC, "Belarus Publishing House" Republican Unitary Enterprise, "Promsvyaz" Republican Unitary Enterprise, etc.
Sovetsky District is also a district of students. Three major educational establishments of the Republic – Belarusian National Technical University, Belarusian University of Informatics and Radio Electronics, Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.
Sovetsky district has a wide network of sports and recreation facilities and skilled personnel who organize sports activities and physical training for its citizens and prepare top-grade sportsmen.
All the above-mentioned achievements, the tidiness and amenities of the district can be accounted not only for good work of the local government, but also the people who are employed at its enterprises and organizations, its hardworking citizens who love the city of Minsk.
