Belarusian whiz kids performed well at the international Olympiads in various subjects this year, BelTA learnt from Yury Gladkov, the chief of the general secondary education department of the Education Ministry of Belarus. Especially successful was the performance at the international Olympiad in biology on July 13-20 in India. The Belarusians won one gold, two silver and one bronze medals. Young Belarusians made a good showing at the international Olympiad in chemistry in Hungary: one gold and three silver medals. A delegation of Belarus at the international Olympiad in mathematics in Madrid included six students from the Luzhesnianka boarding school for gifted and talented children of the Vitebsk oblast, Minsk secondary school No 41, Vitebsk secondary school No 37, Minsk secondary school No 51 and the lyceum of the Belarusian State University. Yury Gladkov noted that the Belarusian Olympic team is usually made up from the winners of the national Olympiads. Best of the best are selected during special sessions which are held in two or three stages. The results of the international Olympiads in physics will be announced soon. The Olympiads in informatics, astronomy and geography will be held in August. |
