15 October 2019 → International conference dedicated to Metropolitan Nicodemus opened in Minsk
On October 15, the international conference "Metropolitan Nicodemus: the Path of Ministry of the Church" opened at the City Hall, the "Minsk-Novosti" Agency correspondent reports.
Previously, the Holy Spirit Cathedral held a memorial service for His Eminence Nicodemus, Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod, Patriarchal Exarch of Western Europe.
October 15 marks the 90th anniversary of his birth. Metropolitan Nicodemus (Boris Rotov, 1929-1978) went down in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church as an outstanding hierarch of the twentieth century who has educated a galaxy of bishops and clergy. In particular, his students are the current Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and the Honorary Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus Metropolitan Filaret.
The participants in the conference, including representatives of the clergy of Belarus, Russia, Cyprus, the Vatican, government agencies, youth, were welcomed by Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslavsky Pavel, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus. He thanked the foreign guests for coming to Minsk.
"I happened to meet with Metropolitan Nicodemus repeatedly. When I was a student at the Moscow Theological Seminary, it happened to attend the services that he performed. This was a special person: wise, energetic. He preached the word of God everywhere, despite the atheistic mood in society, the persecution of the Soviet authorities against the church. He suffered five heart attacks, so it was not by chance that his life was interrupted at the age of 48. Eternal memory to him," said the Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslavsky Pavel.
He also read out the message of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Archbishop Metropolitan of Minsk-Mogilev Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz also addressed the Conference with a welcoming speech. He also met with Metropolitan Nicodemus who, of course, also influenced his fate.
Conference participants shared their memories of the archpastor, noted his merits to the Russian Orthodox Church, talked about the results of international and interfaith activities.
"With this conference, we renew the tradition of holding international forums dedicated to the problems of inter-confessional and cultural dialogue that were held until 2014," said Priest Svyatoslav Rogalsky, Chairman of the Christian Educational Center named after Saints Methodius and Cyril. "Metropolitan Nicodemus made an invaluable contribution to the inter-confessional and interfaith dialogue of the Russian Orthodox Church. The value of the Forum is that those people who worked with him and remember him have gathered here. He spent three months - from August to October 1963 - stayed at the Minsk Department and left a mark in the souls of many people. This will be discussed at the round table "Metropolitan Nicodemus: the View of Contemporaries."
Following the Conference, it is planned to publish a collection of materials.
The organizers of the event are the Belarusian Exarchate of the Moscow Patriarchate, the International Public Association "Christian Educational Center named after Saints Methodius and Cyril", the Institute of Theology of the Belarusian State University and the Minsk City Executive Committee.
