14 October 2019 → Minsk will have 30th twin city - from Turkey

Minsk and Turkish Eskisehir intend to become twinned cities. The initiative to conclude an agreement was voiced by the Mayor of the city of Eskisehir Yulmazh Buyukershen on October 14 at a meeting in the City Hall with Alexander Krepak, Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, the “Minsk-Novosti” Agency correspondentreports.

“We are very selective in concluding twinning agreements, but we are ready to offer it to Minsk,” said the Turkish mayor.

He invited A. Krepak as part of an official delegation to visit Eskisehir in the near future.

“I will be pleased to accept your offer of a visit,” said the Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee. “We have signed 29 agreements with twinned cities. Among them there are Turkish cities too. In particular, since November 2007, Ankara has been our twin city, and since September 2018, - Gaziantep,” he added.

A. Krepak proposed to draw up an appropriate twinning agreement, which should become a roadmap in the development of relations between the two cities in the coming years. This agreement is planned to be signed during a return visit of the Minsk delegation to Turkey.

Eskisehir (meaning Old City in Turkish) is located in the center of the Central Anatolia region, at approximately equal distance from Ankara and Istanbul. The population is about 900 thousand people. The city has most important enterprises of mechanical engineering, the aviation industry (engines for aircraft are manufactured), and the production of household appliances, building materials and ceramics. Here minerals are extracted, agriculture is well developed, and historical excavations are underway.

Eskisehir is one of the ten safest cities in the world. It is also known as a city of students (there are three universities). The current Mayor Y. Buyukershen was Rector of the Anatolian University. This university has become a pioneer in introducing a distance learning system. The success in its development has been taken as a model by many educational institutions in different countries.
